Stop the Reckless Spending Forsyth County is a great place to live and raise a family. But the quality of life we all enjoy will soon end if we continue down the path of reckless spending. In 2008, the incumbent voted to spend $7.2 million for land to build a jail that had not been approved by the voters. Two years later, the land is vacant, it produces no tax revenue and is worth less today than when we bought it. Now, in the midst of one of the worst recessions in decades, he wants to spend $12 million to buy a public golf course. If the incumbent were as reluctant to reach into the taxpayers' wallet as he is his own, Forsyth County would be a lot better off. As your county commissioner, I will not vote for a single tax increase until the Board of Commissioners kicks this habit of reckless spending.
Provide Sound Fiscal Leadership Ask yourself this question: Is the county better off financially today than it was four years ago? The obvious answer is no. This summer, the Board will announce another budget shortfall. Your taxes will go up, county employees will be laid off, services will be reduced or eliminated. There's even a possibility the county credit rating will be lowered, meaning capital expenditures needed for infrastructure improvements will cost much, much more. As a successful small business owner, I know how to operate within a budget and meet a payroll. I will stand strong against any unnecessary expenditures until county government can get its fiscal house in order.
Create Jobs for Our Citizens Unemployment in Georgia and in Forsyth County has reached an all-time high. While it's true that government doesn't create jobs, it's just as true that government can create a pro-business environment that will attract new businesses that will provide quality jobs for our citizens. How? By cutting taxes, streamlining the permitting process and eliminating the red tape in the licensing process. As your commissioner, I will be actively engaged in the area of economic development and the search for new businesses.
Find Alternate Water Sources I applaud Sen. Chip Pearson's bill that establishes a process for the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority's Water Supply Division to loan funds and make grants to local governments to expand existing reservoirs. That bill will pave a path that I will follow as commissioner. One of my top priorities will be to incentivize the development of public/private sector partnerships to build and expand reservoirs.
Restore Trust in County Govt. A succession of five county managers in six years and the angry, bitter divide on the Board of Commissioners has eroded the public's trust in their elected officials. Forsyth County citizens deserve principled, ethical leadership that is ready, willing and able to meet the challenges of the future. That's the type of leadership I will provide.
